Paolo Bouquet has been invited to give a talk on "The integration and portability of semantic social networks via OKKAM "

The talk will be delivered at the International Workshop on Social Networks Interoperability (iwsni) at ASWC2009

Slides are now available here.

Abstract

Social networking platforms have gained increasing popularity, as they offer people new and better opportunities to connect in an easy and timely manner, and to exchange and share various kinds of information. However, these platforms are based on a centralized paradigm, which limits the mobility of their users, and ultimately, their chances to establish new relationships and benefit from different networking services.

In this talk, I will preliminary argue for a decentralized paradigm for social networking, based on a clear separation between user's personal data + social connections and the services offered by different social networking platforms. In this picture, users retain control of their profiles, and social networking platforms focus on the delivery of innovative and competitive services. In my view, this is necessary to unlock the full potential of social networking on the web.

The main part of the talk will be based on the demonstration of a new application for building FOAF profiles, called FOAF-o-MATIC (http://www.foaf-o-matic.org/) which will enable the creation of interoperable and portable profiles and social networks. It makes use of the Entity Name System developed in the EU-funded project OKKAM for reusing global URIs for users (and not only). The interoperability of the resulting profiles will be demonstrated through Sigma (http://sig.ma), a semantic mash-up tool developed on top of the semantic search engine Sindice (http://www.sindice.com/).

This work is done in collaboration with Stefano Bortoli and Themis Palpanas at the University of Trento.
